In a pet’s early years, vaccines, parasite checks and training are all paramount to achieving a healthy pet. Vaccinations are given to stimulate the immune systems. This cannot occur until the immunity derived from the mother declines. Since we cannot predict this decline, a vaccination series is required to best ensure coverage. It is essential for your young pet’s protection that the series be completed. Our puppy and kitty series optimize the fun and enjoyment of the early years.
The American Animal Hospital Association, The American Veterinary Medical Association and the CATalyst Council for Felines all agree that pets need two physical examinations per year due to the rapid aging of their bodies. We support this strategy as being in our patients’ best interest. We recommend starting our twice-yearly examination protocol between the ages of 1 to 2. In addition to vaccinations appropriate for your pet, we will also perform blood chemistry panels with a CBC to establish baselines and to help with early detection of disease.
Mature pets over 7 years of age should not only continue the twice-yearly physical exams, appropriate vaccination protocol and blood tests, but also have additional testing, such as blood pressure and urinalysis performed. For canines, tear production and eye pressure screenings are also recommended yearly. Our feline friends tend to develop thyroid issues, so a thyroid blood profile is a yearly recommendation. Just as with humans, these tests are important for continued good health.
