Educational Requirements for Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT)
- Must have graduated from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technician Program
- Must have passed National and State licensing boards exams, or plans to take them in a reasonable amount of time.
- At least 1 year of on-the-job experience is preferred but not required

- Take immediate action with management to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client or anima in danger
- Has a desire to become an integral part of the AHS family
- Work cooperatively with all volunteers/shadow students and recognize the talent and commitment they bring

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Familiarity with Avimark practice management software (preferred)
- Has a good work ethic – honest, has integrity and accountability
- Compassionate, detail-oriented, and has superior nursing skills
- Fear Free certified or is familiar with Fear Free techniques
- Understands patients’ body language
- Experience with humane animal handling and minimal restraint techniques of healthy, ill and feral patients
- Timely, accurate data entry and record keeping

- Follows instructions/directions accurately and expediently
- Comfortable working in the hospital environment

- Knowledge of canine and feline anatomy and behavior as it relates to understanding the general health of animals

Quality Patient Care:
- Adhere to veterinary care protocols for patients – including medical, behavioral, and general care protocols for the health and well-being of the patients.
- Patient triage: physical exam and vital sign assessment
- Monitor hospitalized patients’ status and notify the attending veterinarian if symptoms warrant attention
- Perform and interpret basic diagnostic tests such as, but not limited to, fecal floatation, skin scrapes, heartworm test, FeLV/VIV tests, etc.
- Prepare patients for surgery and assist in surgery
- Perform venipuncture, x-rays, laboratory tests, IV catheter placement and drug and fluid calculations as ordered by the veterinary staff
- Perform intramuscular and subcutaneous injections
- Clean and pack surgical instruments
- Operate an autoclave
- Nursing care and treatment of the hospitalized patient
- Critical care nursing
- Anesthesia induction, maintenance, monitoring and recovery
- Perioperative surgical, dental and nursing care
- Perform dental prophylaxis and treatments
- Sample collection, laboratory procedures and interpretation
- Diagnostic imaging
- Equipment maintenance and operation
- Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled substances
- Participate in medical rounds as directed by the veterinarian
- Monitoring ICU and hospitalized patients
- Keeping room flow moving efficiently
- Anticipating the veterinarians’ needs, when possible
- Accurate filling of prescriptions
- Detailed medical record keeping
- Making treatment plans
- Exceptional patient care for pets in exam rooms and hospitalized pets
- Keeping exam rooms, treatment areas, surgery, dental and hospital kennel stocked, clean and tidy
- Filling out supply requisites in a timely manner
